Met Éireann overhauling weather warning system for 2024

The existing system of yellow, orange and red weather warnings is to be replaced in 2024, Met Éireann has announced.

Head of Forecasting Evelyn Cusack made the announcement stating “the existing system was causing unintended alarm. We received reports of people stockpiling toilet rolls and cancelling appointments due to yellow warnings.

To make it simpler, and to stop the public losing their minds at the first sign of rain, we are replacing the colour codes with everyday language that we hope makes things clearer.”

The new system will still be divided into three levels, with the below terms now replacing the yellow, orange and red warnings.

Rain Warning – Fierce wet. You’ll get soaked lads. Use an umbrella.

Wind Warning – Put out the washing. Bring in the washing. Bring in the dog.

Cold Warning – Shorts are grand. Maybe wear a jumper. Scarf and woolly hat needed.

Heat Warning – Fierce hot. Stock up on cornettos. Slap on the factor 50.

“We feel this new warning system is more relatable for the plain people of Ireland,” said Cusack. “Now, if you’ll excuse me I need to put out the washing.”
