A local man is on a unique new career path as Ireland’s first bread tout.
Billy Brennan (54) has handed in his notice at his accounting job in order to exclusively focus on trading on the bread black market.
“With all the weather events people are panic buying more and more,” said Brennan. “They’re desperate for an ol’ cut of bread. That’s where I come in.”
Brennan has taken to visiting all the supermarkets within a 100km radius of his home in an old Hi-Ace, loading it up with as much bread as he can get his hands on.
“Pat the Baker, Irish Pride, baguettes, tiger loafs, you name it, I’ve got it,” he said.
With punters increasingly close to starvation with shops closed this morning, Brennan set up stall outside his local SuperValu.
“It was easy. I just started calling out ‘anyone buyin’ or sellin’ loaves’ and I was mobbed instantly.
People need their bread. It’s supply and demand, and I’m happy to do my bit for the community.”
Brennan told DTTN that he was selling slice pans for €20 a pop, with speciality stuff like McCambridges or gluten free bread going for ‘premium’ prices of €50 per unit. And he very kindly sold DTTN the bottom half of a bagel for only €5.
With global warming continuing and extreme weather events set to become more common Ol’ Mr. Brennan looks to be on to a winner.
