A local retiree has found joy in refuse as he continues to cocoon from Covid-19.
Mick Mack (72), who has not left his home since early March, has sought out increasingly novel ways to keep himself entertained.
“I used to enjoy a round of golf and a few pints at the weekend, but that’s all gone now,” said Mack.
Instead, the former tax inspector, has developed a passion for his wheelie bins.
“It’s amazing really,” he said “a few years back we only had the one bin, and now I have four. Even one just for glass.”
Mack begins every week by inching the bins to the opening of his side gate.
“This is a process; a bin ritual, like something the Japanese would do.”
On Tuesday morning the bin is rolled from the back front garden – the first stage of preparation.
“You have to prepare the bin’s chi energy. That’s why Wednesday means cleansing with the special sponge, making sure it looks it’s best.”
Mack’ finally puts the bin outside the front gate on Wednesday night, and maintains a candle light vigil until the Thursday morning collection is completed.
“I’ve had a few odd looks from the bin men. They’re not used to the appreciation, but if you ask me they’re our real front line heroes.”
