Government advises Christmas Dinner be served on three plates, bans gravy

Christmas dinner components should be served on separate plates to reduce Covid transmission risks, An Tanaiste has announced.

“Christmas dinner has three main components,” said Leo Varadkar. “The meat, the spuds and the veggies. We’re advising that families provide guests with a separate disenfected plate for each element. Covid could be lurking in the sprouts or the stuffing. We can’t be too safe.”

This means that a family group of four will require twelve plates just for their main course.

“Ideally we’d ask those cooking to leave the food outside for two hours before serving, but this may not be practical.”

In a controversial move, Varadkar also announced a government crackdown on gravy.

“Gravy is a super-spreader. It gets on every part of the dinner and can’t be trusted. That’s why we’re asking all supermarkets to immediately remove all gravy from their shelves.

We will be giving the Gardai special powers to apprehend any households seen to be pouring gravy on their turkey.”

Varadkar admitted that similar considerations were also given to messy dessert staples such as cream and custard, but that ultimately they were spared as “Dr. Tony is partial to sherry trifle.”
