Baby Names 2020: Covid rampages to top spot

Covid was the most popular baby name of 2020 so far, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has revealed.

Beating out competition from 2019 winners, Jack and Emily, Covid is now the number one name for new born boys and girls in Ireland.

“A unique year has brought us a unique top name,” said a CSO spokesperson. “Parents may have wanted to commemorate an historic time for, or simply have their child act as a warning signal for future generations. Who knows? I don’t get paid enough to really care.”

Covid variations such as Kovid, Cvid, K-Vid, and Coronavirushoax have also gate-crashed the top 20, relegating perennials such as Grace and Daniel to also-ran status. It is believed that the unisex nature of Covid is part of the appeal, as it can be landed on literally anyone.

“Some people might think naming a child after a global pandemic is pretty stupid, but we shouldn’t be so quick to judge,” said the CSO spokesperson. “My first born is called Fiacla. I still haven’t forgiven the wife’s side of the family for that.”

Other names new to the list this year include Lockdown, Wetpub and Mask.

Bookies have already suspended betting on Vaccine topping the list in 2021.
