Marvel Studios has announced the debut of the newest addition to the MCU – Super Sponge.
Super Sponge: Total Soakage, due for release in Summer 2022, will be the first in the planned Super Sponge trilogy.
“We’re very excited to finally bring Super Sponge to a wider audience,” said a Marvel spokesperson. “It’s true that Super Sponge was not part of the Marvel Comics Universe, but fans should have faith. Our writers didn’t just submit it as a drunken prank.”
Super Sponge, who has no gender or sexual orientation, will be the first Marvel character without arms or legs.
“Getting around is a bit of a challenge for Super Sponge,” said the Marvel spokesperson. “That’s where its sidekick Rupert the Rubber Duck comes in. But Sponge has amazing powers – it’s really observant and has the ability to point out stuff that’s really obvious, if only you stopped and thought about it. Sponge is also the most absorbent character we’ve ever had.”
Social media has given Super Sponge a cautious welcome, with some users recognising the opportunity for more diverse casting.
“If the Marvel sponge is asexual with no gender or limbs they’d better commit by casting a limbless eunuch,” said one Twitter user.
Seth Rogen is understood to be in discussions to play Super Sponge.
